Verse Study on Colossians 1:16! Pt 2 of 7.

***What Does Colossians 1:16 TRULY mean?

Here is Colossians 1:16 from the KJV. “For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him: ”

Does Colossians 1:15-23 teach that the Son of God PRE-EXISTED in the eternity past?

Does Colossians 1:15-23 teach PRE-HUMAN EXISTENCE of the Son of God BEFORE his Virgin BIRTH?

Was Jesus born in the eternity past?

Did Jesus CREATE All Things?

Does Colossians 1:15-23 teach us that the Son of God is the CREATOR.

For you see, Trinitarian Christians, Oneness Pentecostal Christians, and the Jehovah’s Witness Christians INTERPRET this passage of Scripture to mean that Almighty God created everything that exists in the entire universe by the Son of God in the ETERNITY past.

But what does the Bible ITSELF teach us in the LIGHT of the WHOLE word of Almighty God.

This Verse Study is part TWO of a series of SEVEN Verse Studies in the 9 verses in Colossians 1:15-23. I combine verses 21-23 into one Verse Study.

So, if you have not read part 1, I encourage you to read it first and then read the whole series of these seven Verse Studies in the ORDER that they are written and numbered.

In other words, please do not skip to the end, because you will MISS some very vital teaching on HOW to discern ERROR from the TRUTH in each one of these Verse Studies.

I will begin all nine of these Verse Studies by reading the verse OUT of its context FIRST.

I am doing this to show my readers HOW to see the ERRORS of interpretation made by the LEADERS of different church denominations in their INTERPRETING the Scriptures APART from the REST of God’s word.

Here is Colosians 1:16 OUT of its CONTEXT from the King James Version and from the New World Translation which DIFFER from each other.

I will highlight the ERRORS in TRANSLATION in green.

And I will place the words that are NOT in the Greek text in green font color, so they stand out to let the readers know they were ADDED by the TRANSLATORS.

Then I will show from a LITERAL translation the words that were NOT translated.

In other words, the Greek word translated as the DEFINITE article THE is indeed in the Greek text.

But for whatever reason, the TRANSLATORS chose NOT to translate the Greek word “ta”, Strong’s #G3588, which is one of the 63 unique forms of the Greek word “ho”.

And, to me, that definite article THE to say “THE ALL” NOT being translated is MISLEADING.

I will explain this further when I quote the LITERAL translation in a moment that is ALSO translated from the SAME Greek text known as the Textus Receptus, which means the received text.

But first, let us read these two DIFFERENT translations of Colossians 1:16 from the SAME Greek text to show you how the translators ADD words that are NOT in the Greek text.

Thus, those ADDED words SHOULD be in italics to let the readers know that they are NOT in the Greek text.

Colossians 1:16 from the KJV.

“For by Him were ALL things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: ALL things were created by Him, and for Him:”

Colossians 1:16 from the NWT.

“because by means of Him ALL other things were created in the heavens and on the earth, the things visible and the things invisible, whether they are thrones or lordships or governments or authorities. ALL other things have been created through Him and for Him.”

Now let us read the LITERAL translation of the SAME Greek text called the Textus Receptus.

A literal translation is a word for word translation, which has very FEW added words.

So, to me, a literal translation is the least BIAS translation.

But even a literal translation can be a little biased toward a preconceived belief.

And thus, the translators translate the Bible to fit what they already BELIEVE.

So, always keep in mind that we are reading TRANSLATIONS of the Bible.

Colossians 1:16 from a LITERAL translation.

“That in Him is CREATED THE ALL, THE in the heavens, and THE on the earth, the seen and the unseen, whether thrones or lordships, or sovereignties, or authorities, THE ALL through Him and INTO Him has been created.”

Now let us compare one phrase at a time between these three different translations.

Here is the first phrase in the KJV.

“For by Him were ALL things created…”

Here is the first phrase in the NWT.

“because by means of Him ALL other things were created...”

Here is the first phrase in the LITERAL.

“That in Him is CREATED THE ALL...”

As you can clearly see, the KJV and NWT “translation” makes it sound as if Jesus himself is the CREATOR of everything that exists.

And that MISLEADS some Christians to become Trinitarian Christians because they know full well that Almighty God is the CREATOR.

Thus, they WRONGLY conclude that Jesus MUST be Almighty God HIMSELF in the flesh.

But when you read the LITERAL translation, you can clearly see that what is created is CREATED in Jesus Christ.

And when you see the words “THE ALL”, then you have to ask yourself, what or WHO is THE ALL that is CREATED in Jesus.

Now, for me, as soon as I read the literal translation the very first time some 40 years ago, the Holy Spirit brought to my remembrance Ephesians 2:10.

And that verse CLEARLY teaches us that Almighty God the Father CREATED us in Jesus when we BELIEVED the Gospel to be BORN-AGAIN as God’s NEW CREATION of NEW CREATURES created in RIGHTEOUSNESS, according to Ephesians 4:24, 2 Corinthians 5:17-21, and Galatians 6:15.

Let us go ahead and read these four verses with the Strong’s number by the English word “in” so that you can see that it is the SAME Greek word in the first phrase in Colossians 1:16.

Here is the first phrase in Colossians 1:16 again.

“That in(Strong’s #G1722 that is CORRECTLY translated as in) him is CREATED THE ALL…(Speaking of THE ALL who BELIEVE in Jesus to be created in Him to become God’s NEW creatures, of which, Jesus is the FIRSTBORN of every CREATURE, the FIRSTBORN among many BRETHREN, according to Romans 8:29)”

Ephesians 2:10.

“For we are His workmanship, created in (Strong’s #G1722 that is CORRECTLY translated as in) Christ Jesus unto good works, which God has before ordained that we should walk in them.”

And we were CREATED in Jesus AFTER the cross and resurrection to be CREATED as God’s NEW CREATION of NEW CREATURES created in Christ Jesus.

Ephesians 4:24,25.

“And that you put on the NEW man, which after God is CREATED in (Strong’s #G1722 that is CORRECTLY translated as in) righteousness and true holiness.

Ephesians 4:25. Wherefore putting away LYING, speak every man TRUTH with his neighbor: for we are members one of another.”

Galatians 6:14,15.

“But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by (Or BECAUSE of ) whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

Galatians 6:15. For in (Strong’s #G1722 that is CORRECTLY translated as in) Christ Jesus neither circumcision avails any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a NEW CREATURE.”

Here is how the concordance in E-Sword defines the Greek word “en” that is WRONGLY or INCORRECTLY translated as by him in Colossians 1:16 in the KJV and the NWT.

A primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state), and (by implication) instrumentality (medially or constructively), that is, a relation of rest (intermediate between G1519 and G1537); “in”, at, (up-) on, by, etc.: - about, after, against, + almost, X altogether, among, X as, at, before, between, (here-) by (+ all means), for (. . . sake of), + give self wholly to, (here-) in (-to, -wardly), X mightily, (because) of, (up-) on, [open-] ly, X outwardly, one, X quickly, X shortly, [speedi-] ly, X that, X there (-in, -on), through (-out), (un-) to(-ward), under, when, where (-with), while, with (-in). Often used in compounds, with substantially the same import; rarely with verbs of motion, and then not to indicate direction, except (elliptically) by a separate (and different) prep.

Total KJV occurrences: 2720.

Now, 2720 occurrences are a lot of verses to look up and see how the Greek word is translated and understood by the context.

Here is a breakdown of how it is translated. The source in BlueletterBible.org so you can do your own study.

Simply type in the Strong’s number in their search box and click search.

The KJV translates Strong’s G1722 in the following manner: in (1,902x), by (163x), with (140x), among (117x), at (113x), on (62x), through (39x), miscellaneous (264x).

So, as you can see, it is almost always translated as “in” and only 163 times and “by”.

Let us move on to the next phrase in Colossians 1:16 so that you can see that the word “THINGS” is NOT in the Greek text and that the definite article THE that is indeed in the Greek text was NOT translated.

Again, I will show all three translations so you can compare them right next to each other.

Here is the second phrase in the KJV.

“...that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers:”

Here is the second phrase in the NWT.

“in the heavens and on the earth, the things visible and the things invisible, whether they are thrones or lordships or governments or authorities.”

Here is the second phrase in the LITERAL.

“THE in the heavens, and THE on the earth, the seen and the unseen, whether thrones or lordships, or sovereignties, or authorities,”

Now, we who are created by Almighty God the Father in Jesus Christ as NEW CREATURES are seated in heavenly places, according to Ephesians 1:3,15-23 and Ephesians 2:6.

Please read Ephesians 1:3,15-23.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

Ephesians 1:15. Wherefore, I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,

Ephesians 1:16. Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;

Ephesians 1:17. That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him: (For you see, God MADE the Son of MAN, Jesus, both Lord and Christ AFTER the cross and resurrection, according to Acts 2:36)

Ephesians 1:18. The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, and what the riches of the glory of His INHERITANCE in the saints, (And we are JOINT-HEIRS WITH Jesus, according to Romans 8:17)

Ephesians 1:19. And what is the exceeding greatness of His power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of His mighty power,

Ephesians 1:20. Which He wrought in Christ, WHEN He raised Him from the dead, and SET Him at His own right hand in the heavenly places, (And, according to 1 Peter 3:22, the angels and principalities were MADE SUBJECT unto Jesus WHEN God SET or SEATED the GLORIFIED Son of MAN, on His throne at His right hand.

So then, CLEARLY the Bible ITSELF teaches us that the HUMAN Son of God was MADE to BECOME DEITY after the cross and resurrection.

Ephesians 1:21. Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world (That which is SEEN) but ALSO in that which is to come: (That which is UNSEEN or not yet seen until the coming of Jesus.

It does not yet APPEAR what we SHALL be, but we KNOW that we shall be LIKE Jesus, for we shall SEE Him as He is, according to 1 John 3:2,3.

In other words, right now in this present world, Jesus is the ONLY begotten Son)

Ephesians 1:22. And has PUT all things under his feet, and GAVE Him to be the head over all things to the church, (So, in this PRESENT world, Jesus is HEAD over the church, but He is not yet RULING over the whole earth as a King, a Lord, or a God.

Thus, Satan, the god of THIS PRESENT world still has dominion over the UNSAVED, but sin has no DOMINION over us, according to Romans 6:9-14)

Ephesians 1:23. Which is His body, the fullness of Him (Speaking of FULNESS of Almighty God who now DWELLS in Jesus will ALSO fill us at the COMING of Jesus) that fills all in all.”

We are the TEMPLE of God. We are the HOUSE of God. We are the HABITATION of God. We are the CITY of God.

But in this present world, only a small PORTION of God dwells in us.

God desires to be ALL and in ALL, according to 1 Corinthians 15:28.

Let us now take a look at the last phrase in Colossians 1:16 in all three translations.

Here is the last phrase in the KJV.

“ALL things were created by him, and for him:”

Here is the last phrase in the NWT.

“ALL other things have been created through him and for him.”

Here is the last phrase in the LITERAL.

“THE ALL through him and INTO him has been created.”

Again, THE ALL is the ALL who BELIEVE and NOT just 144,000 as the Governing Body of the Jehovah’s Witnesses wrongly teach in their publications.

But for now, let us look at the other meanings of the two Greek words translated as by him and FOR him in the KJV.

Also, notice that the word THINGS and OTHER THINGS are ADDED by the translators and they are NOT in the Greek text.

The Greek word translated as by him in the KJV and THROUGH him in the NWT is “dia”, which has many other meanings as well.

Here is how the concordance in E-Sword defines the Greek word “dia”.

In composition it retains the same general import: - after, always, among, at, to avoid, because of (that), briefly, by, for (cause) . . . fore, from, in, by occasion of, of, by reason of, for sake, that, thereby, therefore, X though, through (-out), to, wherefore, with (-in). In composition it retains the same general import.

Total KJV occurrences: 610.

And it is BECAUSE of the OBEDIENCE of Jesus to do all of his God and Father’s WILL is what made it possible for us to be saved.

So, WITHOUT the Son of MAN, submitting his will to the Will of Almighty God to OVERCOME sin and die on the cross as an innocent HUMAN, then not ONE who has become a NEW CREATURE would have become.

And that is what John 1:3 truly means in the LIGHT of the WHOLE word of Almighty God.

The Greek word translated as FOR him in the KJV and the NWT is translated as INTO him.

And we are created INTO the BODY of Jesus Christ called the CHURCH.

So, simply JOINING or ATTENDING a church will not save a person.

Every member of the BODY of Christ must be BORN of God.

And whosoever BELIEVES that Jesus is the CHRIST is BORN of God, according to 1 John 5:1.

And whosoever does not ABIDE in the DOCTRINE of CHRIST is NOT of God, according to 2 John 1:9.
