Does Colossians 1:15-23 teach that the Son of God PRE-EXISTED in the eternity past?

Does Colossians 1:19 Prove Jesus is ALMIGHTY God Himself?

This is part 5 of a 9 part series of Verse Studies on Colossians 1:15-23.

Let us begin this Verse Study by reading Colossians 1:19 out of its CONTEXT first.

The reason that I do this is to show my readers HOW some Christians take verses OUT of their context and READ INTO that verse of Scripture their PRECONCEIVED belief.

Let us read Colossians 1:19 first and then I will explain what I mean by READING INTO a verse what your church denomination TELLS you what it means.

Colossians 1:19.

“For it pleased the Father that in Him should all FULLNESS dwell;”

Now, the Oneness Pentecostal Christians use this verse OUT of its CONTEXT along with Colossians 2:9 to TRY to prove that Jesus is Almighty God Himself.

Let us go ahead and read that verse as well to show you HOW they INCORRECTLY interpret the Scriptures by taking them OUT of their CONTEXT.

Colossians 2:9.

“For in Him dwells ALL the FULNESS of the GODHEAD BODILY.”

Then they TELL you that these verses prove that Jesus is Almighty God the Father Himself, who MANIFESTED Himself into an IMAGE of Himself in a BODILY form.

Trinitarian Christians use the SAME verses of Scripture and TELL you that the Divine God the Son INCARNATED Himself in the FLESH.

And BOTH the Oneness Pentecostal Christians and the Trinitarian Christians TRY to explain why Jesus said the Son can do NOTHING of Himself in John 5:19 by CLAIMING that Jesus had TWO NATURES at the SAME time.

Thus, to THEM, it was only His HUMAN nature that could do nothing of Himself.

But where is even ONE verse in the Bible that teaches Jesus had two natures at the SAME time DURING the days of His FLESH?

There are no such verses of Scripture, not even ONE!

Now, the TRUTH is easy to see when we LEAVE these two verses, Colossians 1:19 and Colossians 2:9 in their CONTEXT to learn WHEN the FULLNESS of the Godhead BEGAN to DWELL in Jesus.

And when you know WHEN the fullness BEGAN to DWELL in Jesus, then you can know for sure WHAT the FULNESS is that now dwells in the BODY of Jesus.

First, let us read some CONTEXT of Colossians 2:9 and I will explain a FEW things so you can follow along more easily.

Colossians 2:6-11.

“As you have therefore RECEIVED Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk you in Him: (In other words, let your faith be in Christ Jesus the Lord for your RIGHTEOUSNESS.

I highlighted Christ Jesus the Lord in light blue and yellow to illustrate to you WHAT the FAITH of the Apostles of Jesus was.

In the very first Gospel sermon, the Apostle Peter teaches us that Almighty God the Father MADE the Son of MAN, Jesus both Lord and Christ AFTER the cross and resurrection, according to Acts 2:36)

Colossians 2:7. Rooted and built up in him, and established in the FAITH, as you have been taught, (NOT by your church denomination, but rather, be established in the FAITH that the Apostles of Jesus TAUGHT) abounding therein with thanksgiving.

Colossians 2:8. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and NOT after Christ. (So then, the CONTEXT of verse 9 is a WARNING to NOT be DECEIVED by FALSE teaching)

Colossians 2:9. FOR (Or BECAUSE) in him DWELLS all the FULNESS of the Godhead bodily. (All we are concerned about at the moment is to answer the question of WHEN the FULLNESS began to DWELL in Jesus.

After we know WHEN the FULLNESS began to dwell in Jesus, then we can know WHAT the FULNESS is that began to DWELL in Jesus)

Colossians 2:10. And you are complete in Him, which is the HEAD of all principality and power:

Colossians 2:11. In whom ALSO you are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:”

In other words, Paul is saying, by the way, you are ALSO circumcised with the circumcision of CHRIST.

To say this another way, do not let those seventh day of the week Sabbath-keeping Christians JUDGE you that you are NOT PLEASING to God.

And therefore, you must keep the Law of Moses to the LETTER in order to be PLEASING to God.

No! That is NOT the FAITH you have been taught by me and the other Apostles.

You are COMPLETE in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Another meaning of the Greek word “translated” as “complete” in the KJV means APPROVED.

In other words, you are APPROVED of God being in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Jesus is the END of the law for RIGHTEOUSNESS, according to Romans 10:4.

Now that you understand the FAITH that the Apostles taught concerning the HUMAN Son of God being MADE both Lord and Christ AFTER the cross and resurrection, according to Acts 2:36, let us read some CONTEXT of Colossians 1:19.

Colossians 1:1-6.

“Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus our brother,

Colossians 1:2. To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father AND the Lord Jesus Christ. (Clearly, Jesus is NOT Almighty God the Father Himself as the Oneness Pentecostal Christians wrongly teach)

Colossians 1:3. We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, (And CLEARLY Jesus is NOT Almighty God Himself. For you see, how can Almighty God be THE God of Almighty God?

The TRUTH of the WHOLE word of Almighty God is that the HUMAN Son of God was MADE to BECOME a God after the cross and resurrection to rule FOR Yahweh in the NAME of Yahweh for 1000 years.

God is doing this so that He can JUDGE Satan, the fallen angels and the world by the MAN whom He ORDAINED and RAISED from the DEAD, according to Acts 17:29-31)

Colossians 1:4. Since we heard of your FAITH in Christ Jesus, and of the love which you have to all the saints,

Colossians 1:5. For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof you heard before in the word of the TRUTH of the gospel;

Colossians 1:6. Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and brings forth fruit, as it does also in you, since the day you heard of it, and knew the grace of God in TRUTH:”

So then, the God INTENDED meaning of the words of the Apostle Paul in Colossians 1:9 will NOT CONTRADICT the TRUE FAITH of the Apostles who TAUGHT us in Acts 2:36 that this SAME Jesus, speaking of the Son of MAN, Jesus, the HUMAN Son of God, was MADE both Lord and Christ AFTER the cross and resurrection.

Now, with the TRUE FAITH of the TRUE Gospel of Jesus Christ in mind, let us read Colossians 1:13-19.

Colossians 1:13-19.

“Who (Speaking of Almighty God, the Father) has delivered us from the power of darkness, and has translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son: (Keep in mind the TRUE FAITH of Jesus being MADE the Messiah or the Christ AFTER he suffered and died on the cross for the sins of the whole world)

Colossians 1:14. In whom we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins: (Please notice that the Greek word “en”, Strong’s number 1722, is translated as “in” whom.

In other words, in the GLORIFIED Son of MAN, Jesus, we have redemption through His SHED blood on the cross)

Colossians 1:15. Who (Speaking of the GLORIFIED Jesus) is the IMAGE of the invisible God, the FIRSTBORN of every CREATURE: (The Son of MAN, Jesus, ENTERED INTO glory after He suffered and died on the cross, according to Luke 24:26,27)

Colossians 1:16. For by him were ALL things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, (Or more correctly translated, “for in him were the ALL of every NEW CREATURE created, those in heaven, and those on the earth”) visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: (In Jesus the Messiah, we are SET in heavenly places far above all principalities and powers, according to Ephesians 1:3, Ephesians 1:18-23, Ephesians 2:6, Matthew 28:18,19, Romans 6:6-14, and Revelation 12:11) ALL things were created by him, and for him: (Or more correctly translated, “the ALL of whosoever believe were created because of Him and into Him”)

Colossians 1:17. And He is before ALL things, and by him ALL things consist. (Or more correctly translated, “and he is in front of or prior to the ALL of EVERY CREATURE” by being the FIRSTBORN from the DEAD, according to the CONTEXT in the very next verse of Scripture)

Colossians 1:18. And He is the head of the body, the church: who is the BEGINNING, the FIRSTBORN from the DEAD; THAT (Or so THAT) in ALL things He might have the preeminence. (Or more correctly translated, Jesus is the BEGINNING of the CHURCH of the FIRSTBORN, God’s NEW CREATION.

Jesus is the FIRST human BEGOTTEN from the DEAD and given eternal life.

And God did that so that in the ALL or whosoever BELIEVES He might be FIRST place in their life to be their Lord and Messiah)

Colossians 1:19. For it PLEASED the Father that in Him should all fullness dwell;”

According to the CONTEXT, it was the obedience of His human Son, Jesus, to suffer and die on the cross for the sins of the world.

That is WHAT PLEASED Almighty God the Father to HIGHLY EXALT the Son of MAN, Jesus, and make him both Lord and Christ by GIVING him ALL POWER and AUTHORITY over the principalities and powers of the air, according to Matthew 28:18,19, Romans 1:4, and 1 Peter 3:22, plus many other verses of Scripture.

Simply read Philippians 2:8-11, which says, WHEREFORE.

The word “wherefore” is the REASON for WHY God HIGHLY EXALTED the Son of MAN, Jesus.

Philippians 2:8-11.

“And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled himself, and BECAME obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. (How did Jesus BECOME obedient?

Does this mean that Jesus sinned and then repented?

No! Not at all. It simply means that when Satan TEMPTED Jesus, then Jesus chose to do his God and Father’s will.

Jesus did that by SUBMITTING his own will of being TEMPTED to OBEY his Father’s will and NOT submit to Satan’s will)

Philippians 2:9. WHEREFORE (Or for this very REASON of Jesus submitting His own will to do the will of His God and Father) God also has highly exalted Him, and has GIVEN Him a NAME which is above every name:

Philippians 2:10. THAT at the NAME of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

Philippians 2:11. And THAT every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

So then, according to the WHOLE word of Almighty God, the FULLNESS is the fullness of DEITY to become the Lord of the Sabbath, a King, and a God to rule over the WHOLE earth during the world to come.

But the FULNESS is ALSO the Divine NATURE of IMMORTALITY!

And, according to 2 Peter 1:4, WE will ALSO be made PARTAKERS of the Divine NATURE at the COMING of Jesus to rule over the earth as the Lord of the Sabbath WITH Jesus.

The Sabbath is the 1000-year reign of Jesus. Please read the Verse Study W-10. WHAT DOES COLOSSIANS 2:9 TRULY MEAN?

Trinitarian Christians argue that God gave His Spirit to Jesus WITHOUT MEASURE.

So let us go ahead and read that verse of Scripture.

John 3:34.

“For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God: for God gives NOT the Spirit by MEASURE unto Him.”

Again, they take this verse OUT of its CONTEXT. One of the disciples of John the baptist asks him why Jesus is also baptizing people.

And John tells his disciple the following. Allow me to paraphrase a little.

My own paraphrased Version of John 3:34-36.

“God has COMMISSIONED Him and Jesus speaks what God tells Him to speak. THEREFORE, God gives NOT the Spirit by MEASURE.

John 3:35. The Father loves the Son, and has given ALL things into His hand.

John 3:36. He that believes on the Son has everlasting life: and he that believes not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abides on him.”

John is talking about the GLORIFIED Son of MAN, Jesus, after the cross and resurrection.

That was when ALL POWER and AUTHORITY was GIVEN to Jesus, according to Matthew 28:18,19, Romans 1:4, and 1 Peter 3:22, plus many other verses of Scripture, such as Philippians 2:6-11.

That was WHEN the HUMAN Son of Almighty God ENTERED INTO GLORY, according to Luke 24:26.

In John 5:19, Jesus CLEARLY teaches us that during the days of His MINISTRY, the Son could do NOTHING of Himself.

So, to me, the Bible ITSELF clearly teaches us that Jesus BECAME a DEITY under and subject to His God and Father for the purpose of JUDGING Satan and the fallen angels.

And after you understand that the REASON that Yahweh did that is to STILL His ENEMIES, Satan and the fallen angels.

Then you can understand that God made His human Son to become “a” Lord, “a” King, and “a” God, under and subject to his God and Father in order to JUDGE Satan and the fallen angels.
